Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work that makes a website readable, checkable and quotable for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Grok. Pavlo Zhydkykh sets up GEO in every site he builds for AI, fintech and B2B startups; an existing site starts with a free check and a report in 48 hours.

Key takeaways
- GEO builds on SEO: Google states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search, such as AI Overviews.[3]
- A 2023 study, later presented at KDD 2024, found that GEO methods can raise visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.[2]
- Most AI crawlers read the raw HTML and do not run JavaScript, so text that loads later stays invisible to those crawlers.
- GEO setup (structured data, llms.txt, answer-first copy and AI crawler access) is included in every site Pavlo Zhydkykh builds.
- For Inturai, an AI B2B company, Pavlo did the design, the Framer build, SEO and GEO across 37 pages, live since February 2026.
What is GEO?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work that helps AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini find, understand and recommend a website, the way SEO does for Google. GEO matters because an assistant answers with a short list of names, and a site the assistant cannot read or verify does not make that list.
Wikipedia: Generative engine optimization
“Most GEO advice is tricks. I would rather put the price, the buyer and the timeline in plain HTML, because that is what assistants quote.”
Fit check
Is GEO
right for you?
A good fit if
- AI, fintech or B2B startups whose buyers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a shortlist before booking a demo.
- Sites whose prices, cases and answers are hidden in images, scripts or vague slogans.
- Teams that rank on Google but go unnamed when an assistant is asked for vendors in the same category.
- Sites on Framer or Astro + Sanity, where Pavlo makes the fixes himself.
Not the right fit if
- You need a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT answers: no one controls what an assistant says, and Pavlo does not promise a spot.
- There is nothing to quote yet: no prices, no cases, no clear offer to describe.
- You want hundreds of AI-written pages: thin pages make a site harder to trust, not easier.
- Your site runs on another platform and you want Pavlo to edit the site: Pavlo writes the fix list for your own developer instead.
Compared
SEO and GEO, side by side
GEO adds to SEO instead of replacing SEO. The difference is the reader: Google ranks a page, an assistant quotes the page.
| Criterion | Classic SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Reader | Google ranks the page | An assistant quotes the page |
| Goal | A click from a results page | A mention or a link inside an answer |
| Main signals | Links, relevance, speed | Clear answers, schema, outside mentions |
| Content | Keyword-led pages | Direct answers with prices and timelines |
| Machine files | sitemap.xml and robots.txt | Plus llms.txt and AI crawler rules |
| Measured by | Rankings in Search Console | Buyer questions asked in AI engines |
Checklist
6 GEO fixes that make a page quotable
The changes Pavlo makes most often, in the order of his checks. Each one can be checked in a minute.
1. Let the AI crawlers in
GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot obey robots.txt. One old "Disallow" line keeps the whole site away from all three.
2. Put the words in the HTML
Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. Hero text, prices and FAQ answers belong in the page source, not in content loaded later.
3. Answer first, then explain
Assistants quote direct answers: the buyer, the price, the timeline. The answer goes in the first sentence of the section.
4. Name things in schema
Organization, Service, Offer and FAQPage markup state the company, services, prices and answers in a format machines do not have to guess.
5. Add an llms.txt file
A short plain-text summary at /llms.txt tells assistants who you are, what you sell and for how much.
6. Get mentioned elsewhere
Assistants lean on outside sources: reviews, profiles, directories, articles. Pavlo lists the ones the engines cite most for your category.
How it works
From free check to fixes, step by step
The check is free and the report arrives in 48 hours. The fixes after the report are scoped, priced and scheduled in one fixed quote.
| # | Step | When | What happens | You get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Free AI visibility check | Within 48 hours | 20 buyer questions asked in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Grok, with the answers and cited sources saved. | Where you appear and who appears instead |
| 02 | Site read-through | After the report | robots.txt, raw HTML, schema, llms.txt and key page copy checked against what the engines cite. | A fix list ranked by impact |
| 03 | Call and fixed quote | After the report | A short call on the fix list and the pages that matter most for sales. | A fixed price and timeline in writing |
| 04 | Technical fixes | Set in the quote | AI crawler access, text in the first HTML response, JSON-LD schema and an llms.txt summary. | A site machines can read |
| 05 | Answer-first copy | Set in the quote | Key pages rewritten so the first sentence answers the buyer: for whom, at what price, in what time. | Pages an assistant can quote |
| 06 | Outside mentions | Set in the quote | The profiles, directories and articles the engines cite in your category, in priority order. | A list your team can work through |
| 07 | Launch and validation | Launch day | Fixes go live and are checked in the raw HTML and the Rich Results Test. The 20 questions are kept for a later rerun. | A validated site, then $30 an hour when needed |

FAQ
Questions about
GEO
Still unsure? Ask your AI about Pavlo Zhydkykh:
Q.01How much does GEO cost?
GEO setup is included in every new site Pavlo builds, at no extra cost. For an existing site the free AI visibility check comes first, then a fixed quote for the fixes, and small changes cost $30 an hour.
Q.02How long until AI assistants pick up the changes?
There is no fixed date: each engine recrawls and updates on a separate schedule, and Pavlo does not promise one. The fixes themselves are scheduled in the quote, and the free check report arrives in 48 hours.
Q.03Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my company?
No. No one controls what an assistant answers, so Pavlo states what is checked and fixed: crawler access, readable HTML, schema, llms.txt and answer-first copy. Those are the parts a website owner can influence.
Q.04What do I need to provide?
Your site URL, the category you sell in and the questions buyers ask before buying. For the fixes, editor access to the site and the facts the pages should state: prices, timelines and cases.
Q.05Who owns the changes?
You do. Schema, llms.txt and the rewritten copy live in your own site and CMS, with no plugin or subscription to keep paying for.
Q.06What happens after the fixes go live?
The 20 buyer questions from the check are kept, so the same questions can be asked again later to compare. Further edits cost $30 an hour, with no retainer and no monthly fee.
